C&C Group Chairman Ralph Findlay awarded OBE

    Chairman Ralph Findlay awarded OBE

Ralph Findlay, Chairman of C&C Group, has been recognised in the 2023 New Year Honours list. Findlay, who served as Chief Executive Officer of UK pub group Marston’s for 20 years, before joining C&C group in 2022, was awarded an OBE for services to the hospitality sector.

“I was honoured and fortunate to have been awarded an OBE for services to hospitality in the New Year Honours list. Part of the responsibility for me of receiving this honour is using it to continue to make the case for the huge contribution the hospitality sector makes to the UK – not just to people’s lives and livelihoods, but by contributing hundreds of millions to government in tax receipts, providing millions of jobs, and helping to sustain communities. These points bear repeating, often and loudly. It is obvious that parts of the UK’s valuable and essential public services are stressed, and that government funding is stretched thin.
In these circumstances, it will be tempting for the government to try to raise more money from the sector, but that would be a mistake. Hospitality is still scarred by covid and is now trying to navigate a landscape of higher costs and weak consumer confidence. Hospitality needs a supportive government. If it gets it, the sector will grow; if it doesn’t, it will shrink – and so will the number of jobs and the amount of tax contributed to our public services. The number of empty pubs, bars and restaurants will increase. The sector is making real progress to support the government’s health agenda, to respond to the environmental challenges we face, and to increase pay and make the Living Wage a reality. It’s a sector employing a high proportion of women, and we know that women were disproportionately affected economically by covid through job losses and employment insecurity.Government has said that it wants women’s economic empowerment to be a focus in the post pandemic economic recovery: well, hospitality provides an opportunity to do just that. For hospitality, when it comes to taxes and avoidable costs, less will be more for everybody.”

David Forde, CEO added: “On behalf of all our colleagues at C&C, I congratulate Ralph on this award. This is no less than Ralph deserves, having served the hospitality industry for over 30 years. Everyone at C&C Group is proud to see Ralph recognised for his service to our industry.”

            MAGNERS and ROMAN KEMP

Garden Me: Magners and Roman Kemp invite people to some of the Nation’s most beautiful back gardens as study finds 6.5m Brits don’t have access to private greenspace

            • 1 in 8 Brits have no garden and almost a fifth of the population don’t have any nearby greenspace
            • Magners has joined forces with Roman Kemp to unlock the gates to some of the nation’s most idyllic private gardens for a series of mini gatherings throughout the summer
            • Study reveals lack of garden access an issue for 16 million Millennials across the UK
            • Around 10% of Londoners must travel more than half an hour to find greenspace

We may be set for the hottest summer on record but despite the sweltering temperatures, new research from Magners shows that a staggering 6.5 million Brits don’t have access to a garden and almost 20% of the adult population have no public parks or green space near to their home.

Despite the majority of the nation (over 60%) having a newfound appreciation for the outdoors following the pandemic and those lucky to have gardens reporting spending almost 10 hours (9.81) per week in them, age plays an important role in the nationwide garden lottery. Millennials and Gen Z are twice as likely to not own or have access to a garden, compared with only 1 in 20 over the age of 54.

From barbecues to time outdoors with family, Magners’ study reveals why a whopping 70% of the population consider having a garden an important factor when choosing where to live, highlighting benefits including increased happiness and relaxation. In fact, almost half of the nation (48%) claim to feel less stressed in an outdoor environment.

In a bid to help the nation to enjoy the outdoors more this summer, Magners Cider has teamed up with Roman Kemp to give people the opportunity to host their very own garden parties in some of the most unique and desirable urban dwellings.

Together they are opening the gates to a boutique selection of glamourous and tropical lawns, inviting potentially gardenless fans to spend time together under the sun with friends throughout July and August – all from the comfort of unique private green space.

So, the iconic Irish cider brand has searched high and low to find a dazzling array of urban oases where groups of friends can host their own cider themed gatherings – with one lucky party joined by Roman Kemp for the afternoon as the ultimate VIP guest.

Magners is offering free garden parties to fans across the UK

Popping up in London, where more than one in five residents (21.02%) report not having any green space or parks nearby, the incredible gardens include a Kensington showstopper complete with triple-tiered contemporary patio, and a kitsch Victorian terrace featuring watermelon themed decor and a jungle of palm trees. Lucky fans in Birmingham and Manchester will also be able to lounge in some of the most extraordinary locations these cities have to offer.

Magners together with Capital Breakfast show host and TV presenter, Roman Kemp, will be inviting hundreds of fans behind the garden gates into a unique collection of incredible spaces for good times with their nearest and dearest, ice-cold ciders and some fun games.

Iain Telford, Magners’ Senior Brand Manager, commented:

“With temperatures reaching record highs, we wanted to provide something special for people this summer. Not all of us have access to a private garden or have large outdoor spaces nearby, so we’re excited to be able to offer some incredible dwellings which have been hand selected to absolutely wow the nation.

“There’s really nothing better than the refreshment of a cold glass of Magners over ice, outdoors on a hot day, and we’re excited to help hundreds of drinkers to enjoy this experience from the comfort of a beautiful private garden.”

Magners fans will be able to claim a two-hour complimentary garden experience for up to six attendees, on either a Saturday or Sunday throughout summer. Launching on Saturday 30 July, the garden parties will run every weekend until Sunday 14 August.

Guests can expect iced cold Magners, a goodie bag full of surprises and bespoke Magners merchandise, and most importantly a private garden that is sure to ‘wow’ attendees.

            Roman Kemp commented:

“I love bringing people together, and throughout the summer, you really can’t beat a garden party with an ice-cold Magners, especially in this glorious weather.

“When the parks are full, what better way to enjoy the sunshine than in your own private tropical retreat, with free cider for your friends? And for one lucky group, I’ll be making a surprise appearance.”

Leo Varadkar Opens Bulmers Sustainability Project in Clonmel

                  Leo Varadkar in Clonmel

Installation of Ireland’s largest rooftop solar panel farm and removal of plastic from can packaging

Leo Varadkar, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, officially opened C&C Group’s new Sustainability Project at the Bulmers Cider manufacturing facility in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, on Friday 18 February.

This project forms part of C&C Group’s broader ESG strategy and commitment to delivering to a better world.

The Bulmers Sustainability Project includes the installation of what is now the largest rooftop solar panel farm in Ireland, which will reduce the Clonmel site’s carbon emissions by 4%, saving 286,746kg of CO2 per year and almost 10 million kg over the next 20 years. The solar panels provide 10% of electricity used on site, meaning 100% of the electricity used in the Bulmers manufacturing facility in Clonmel is provided by renewable sources. Additionally, the company committed significant investment into ‘dry end’ packaging machinery to reduce the environmental impact and ecological footprint of consumer packaging.

As of January 2022, plastic is no longer used in the packaging of C&C Group’s canned products in Clonmel, which will result in 100 million mid cone rings per annum being removed from the environment.

These initiatives form part of C&C Group’s comprehensive ESG strategy, which include working with the Science Based Targets initiative (‘SBTi’) to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 35%, and Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030. C&C Group has also pledged to be a carbon‐neutral business by 2050.

Leo Varadkar, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, commented:

“Congratulations to C&C Group for making these changes, which will reduce the Clonmel site’s overall emissions by 4% and the environmental impact from the packaging of Bulmers and other canned products. Enterprise has a really important role to play in bringing down our emissions and it’s great to see companies taking the lead and setting an example with their actions.
We recently launched a website, www.climatetoolkit4business.gov.ie, which is a good place to start for any company thinking of making changes themselves. It’s so important that we help businesses no matter what stage they are at.

Congratulations again to the entire team at Bulmers, it was great to see what you’ve done for myself, and I wish you the best of luck for the future.”

Joining Leo Varadkar and colleagues from the Bulmers site in Clonmel to officially open the project, C&C Group CEO, David Forde, commented:

“I am delighted to welcome Tánaiste, Leo Varadkar to celebrate the official opening our Bulmers Sustainability Project, an ambition our colleagues here in Clonmel have worked incredibly hard to deliver and one we are immensely proud of. This initiative forms part of our broader C&C Group ESG strategy and demonstrates our commitment to be a carbon‐neutral business by 2050 and deliver to a better world.”

Bibendum’s Bordeaux Collection grows as new chateaux join the fold

Bibendum, the premium wine specialist, has announced that new estates will be joining its ground breaking Bordeaux Collection. Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite-Rothschild, Carruades de Lafite, Duhart-Milon and Evangile), Figeac, Montrose, Cantenac Brown, Beausejour Becot, Smith Haut Lafitte and Suduiraut will be joining the collection, which initially launched in 2020.

Previously known as the Bordeaux project, the revolutionary Bordeaux Collection has been hugely successful, growing from an amazing initial list of estates to a comprehensive list of some of Bordeaux’s most famous and prestigious estates.

As the home of Bordeaux for the hospitality industry in the UK, Bibendum created the project to reinvigorate drinking of premium Bordeaux wines. It shakes up the way that Bordeaux wines are sold to the UK on-trade, giving chateaux direct access to the prestigious accounts that their wines are sold in, alongside significant marketing support and a calendar of events. A first for the UK on-trade, it also gives on-trade customers access to a carefully curated list of mature Bordeaux wines with perfect provenance as the wines come direct from chateaux through Compagnie Médocaine des Grands Crus.

Robert Mathias, Head of Fine Wine at Bibendum says:

“I am extremely excited that such prestigious properties will be joining our Bordeaux range as we continue to build on the project’s success. It cements Bibendum as the home for Cru Classé Bordeaux for the hospitality industry.”
